Derrick Avery Jr., a senior at Hermitage High School, has accepted a Shirley Jean Hicks Russell African American Family and Friends Day Endowed Scholarship to attend South Arkansas Community College this fall.
The son of Latoya Jackson and Derrick Avery Sr. of Hermitage is a member of the basketball, track and field and football teams, and of the chess club.
The scholarship is funded through the SouthArk Foundation.
