The two candidates running for the Republican nomination for Drew County Judge squared off in a debate Tuesday evening conducted in the Forestry Building on the campus of UAM. Dr. Carol Strong, Professor of Political Science at UAM moderated the meeting. A variety of issues were discussed and a good crowd was in attendance. The debate was recorded by Monticellolive and can be watched on the Monticellolive website.
Running for County Judge on the Republican ticket are incumbent Judge Robert Akin and challenger Jessie Griffin. Since there is no candidate running on the Democratic ticket or as an independent, the winner of the primary will be elected Judge for a four year term beginning January 1, 2023. Both men had literature available outlining their platforms and concerns. Judge Akins material included endorsements from Lt. Governor Tim Griffin, State Senator Ben Gilmore and State Representative Howard Beaty. Mr. Griffin stressed the need for better pay for county employees and to keep the public better informed on how County money is spent.
There were some very light fireworks during the debate with Judge Akin stating that Mr. Griffin did not have a clue and Mr. Griffin indicating some things being done by the county were driving him crazy. Both men pledged to work with the quorum court.
