Aviation Commission discusses recent improvement project and aircraft fuel leak at Warren airport

Warren Aviation Commission met for the first time since January Thursday night to discuss two projects.

Present were Chairman Joe Wharton and Commissioners Vernon Colvin II, Rick Stracner and Rob Reep. Commissioner Bryan Martin was not present. Mayor Denisa Pennington also attended the meeting.

A conference call was held with Alex Smith of McClelland Consulting Engineers Inc. of Little Rock to discuss a ramp resurfacing project that began two years ago. The project was funded under a $500,000 Federal Aviation Administration grant, with the federal government paying 90 percent of the cost and the state Aeronautics Commission paying the other 10 percent.

Smith said his company had not signed off on the project yet to allow Pioneer Construction Co. of Crossett to be paid. He said a punch list of items to be corrected still has to be completed and then engineers will make a final inspection. However, he did say the project appeared to have come in under budget.

A recent leak of jet fuel from a helicopter was also discussed. Smith said he estimated the cost of repairs would be about $10,000 but it didn’t appear as if it could be included under the previous grant. However, he said he felt a separate grant could be obtained.

Stracner noted the fuel spill had caused some disintegration of concrete. A taxiway and a portion of the airport apron will have to be closed temporarily once repairs commence.
