MAGNOLIA, AR – As the global community moves toward sustainable energy solutions, Arkansas is uniquely positioned to lead this transition. The state, particularly the southwestern region, is rich in natural resources, including significant lithium deposits. This discovery marks a new chapter for Arkansas, offering the potential to become a major player in the energy sector, as the focus shifts toward an all-of-the-above approach to energy production and consumption.
Recent geological surveys have uncovered valuable lithium reserves in the Smackover Formation, presenting an opportunity that could transform the state’s economy. To fully capitalize on this discovery, it is essential to train a workforce capable of filling the jobs that will emerge with new investments. Southern Arkansas University is working closely with regional and statewide stakeholders to ensure a home-grown workforce is prepared to meet this demand.
SAU demonstrated its responsiveness to industry needs when it launched a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree in 2014. Graduates from the ABET-accredited engineering program now provide a steady talent pipeline to regional chemical and defense industries. The lithium industry presents an exciting new frontier for these graduates. SAU is currently reviewing its curriculum to address skills gaps specific to the lithium industry, focusing on specialized training in mineral extraction, environmental stewardship, and advanced manufacturing processes. Additionally, the University is exploring expanded certificates of proficiency to provide training and retooling opportunities for non-degree seeking participants in the labor force. These efforts aim to equip students with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge necessary to excel in the lithium industry.
To harness these resources, partnerships with industry leaders, including Albemarle, ExxonMobil, LANXESS, Standard Lithium, TETRA Technologies, and others, are crucial. These collaborations seek to develop cutting-edge facilities capable of extracting lithium from deep underground brines in an environmentally responsible manner. The planned operations will not only ensure the sustainable extraction of lithium but also facilitate its processing within the state, maximizing economic benefits for local communities.
SAU is committed to fostering an educational environment that will enable the lithium industry to thrive. By collaborating with industry partners, SAU aims to provide students with hands-on experience and direct pathways into this emerging sector. Additionally, by supporting fair and balanced royalty agreements, the state of Arkansas can be positioned at the forefront of the global energy revolution.
