WARREN, Ark. – The Warren Aviation Commission held its regular meeting on August 15, 2024, at 6:00 PM in the Warren Municipal Building. The meeting began on a celebratory note as Commissioner Rick Stracner was honored with the prestigious Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award from the FAA for 50 years of safe flight. Following the presentation, Commission Chairman Dr. Joe Wharton officially called the meeting to order, and the minutes from the May meeting were approved without objection.
Building Official Rob Johnson presented an airport maintenance report, noting that the airport remains in good condition overall. However, he highlighted ongoing issues with flooding and drainage that continue to require attention. Johnson mentioned that a new overlay on the runway would likely be needed soon, which could potentially mitigate the drainage problems by raising the runway by a few inches. He also noted some current issues with asphalt chipping and cracks, though the airport remains fully functional.
The Commission received an update on airport signage, which is nearing completion. The City is awaiting the finalization of an official name change with the FAA to “John B. Frazer Field/Warren Municipal Airport.” This change, approved by the Commission and City Council in May 2023, honors former Warren Mayor and local businessman John Frazer, whose family donated the land for the airport.
A brief discussion was held regarding the potential repurposing of a small metal cover currently at the City Park Shop. The cover could be moved to the airport to serve as protection for the fuel pump, potentially saving the City money. Commissioners agreed to visit the Park to assess the cover before making a decision.
The Commission reviewed a quote from Spatco Energy Solutions for a new credit card/debit card reader for the airport’s fuel pump. The total cost is estimated at $26,875.68. The Commission plans to explore potential grant opportunities to fund this upgrade.
Lastly, the Commission discussed the possibility of installing full Wi-Fi at the airport. Two options were considered: Vyve and Starlink. Further exploration of these options will be conducted.
