WARREN, Ark. – Despite recent rainfall in portions of South Arkansas, burn bans remain in effect across several counties, with officials urging residents to exercise caution.
As of Monday afternoon, September 2, 2024, Jefferson, Lincoln, Chicot, Bradley, Ouachita, and Union Counties are all still under burn bans. These measures are in place to reduce the risk of wildfires, which continue to threaten the region despite the recent showers.
Although Cleveland, Calhoun, Drew, Ashley, and Desha Counties are not currently under burn bans, they remain at a high risk of wildfires, according to the Arkansas Forestry Division. Dallas County is currently listed as having a Moderate Risk.
The National Weather Service is forecasting additional rainfall later this week, with a 60 percent chance of rain on Wednesday and a 40 percent chance on Thursday. However, officials emphasize that these rain predictions may not be sufficient to reduce the ongoing fire danger across the region.
Authorities are reminding residents to remain vigilant and follow safety measures, even if they reside in a county not currently under a burn ban.

- Avoid Open Flames: Refrain from burning leaves, trash, or other materials outdoors. Even small sparks can lead to large wildfires under dry conditions.
- Properly Dispose of Cigarettes: Never throw cigarette butts out of car windows or on the ground. Ensure they are fully extinguished before disposal.
- Grill Safely: If using a grill, keep it on a non-flammable surface, away from dry grass or vegetation. Always have a water source nearby to extinguish any accidental fires.
- Check Equipment: Ensure that outdoor machinery, like lawnmowers, do not emit sparks. Avoid using such equipment during high-risk periods.
- Create a Safety Zone: Clear away dry leaves, grass, and other flammable materials from around your home and property to create a defensible space.
- Stay Informed: Monitor local weather reports and fire danger ratings. Follow the guidance of local authorities regarding burn bans and fire safety.
