OBU’s Gonzalez Named GAC Defensive Player of the Week

RUSSELLVILLE, Arkansas – The Great American Conference has announced its week one football players of the week with Ouachita senior defensive end Mikey Gonzalez earning top defensive honors.

Gonzalez aided the Tigers to a 42-3 win over Southwestern Oklahoma State last Thursday night at home in the 2024 season opener. It was the 17th straight season-opening victory for the Tigers and the 17th straight win in home openers.

The Tampa, Florida native racked up eight tackles in the win, including two quarterback sacks for a combined loss of eight yards and 3.5 total tackles for loss for a total of 11 yards. Gonzalez forced a fumble on one of his sacks, which was recovered by the Tigers.

As a team, the Tiger defense ended up with three sacks and 17 total lost yardage plays.

The Tigers, now ranked No. 18 in NCAA Division II by the American Football Coaches Association and No. 17 by D2Football.com, head to Alva, Oklahoma this Thursday night to take on Northwestern Oklahoma State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Ranger Field. NWOSU lost its season-opening game at Arkansas-Monticello last Thursday by a final score of 34-7.
