STAR CITY, Ark. – The Star City Bulldogs secured a hard-fought 34-29 win over the Dumas Bobcats on Friday night, claiming the Battle of the Bayou Trophy in their 2024 season opener. The victory also marked a successful debut for new head coach Chris Norton.
Star City struck first when quarterback Jacob Boothe connected with wide receiver Dujuan Haney for a 30-yard touchdown. A failed extra point kept the Bulldogs’ lead at 6-0 with 7:56 left in the first quarter. Dumas quickly responded with a 2-yard rush from tailback Dylan Bell, followed by a successful extra point to take a 7-6 lead.
Dumas extended their advantage after linebacker Deshawn Norah intercepted Boothe’s pass and returned it 70 yards for a pick-six, making it 14-6. However, Star City fought back, with senior running back Peyton Taylor breaking free for a 20-yard touchdown run, though the two-point conversion failed, leaving Dumas up 14-12.
Boothe later capped off a short drive with a 1-yard quarterback sneak to put Star City ahead 20-14. A lightning delay paused the action with 4:30 remaining in the second quarter. After the delay, Dylan Bell tied the game for Dumas with a 1-yard run, and the Bobcats took a slim 21-20 lead into halftime.
Star City regained momentum in the third quarter when Taylor added a 14-yard touchdown run to give the Bulldogs a 27-21 edge. Boothe then found receiver Zairen Beene for a 23-yard touchdown, extending the lead to 34-21.
Dumas attempted a comeback when quarterback Darnail Walker connected with Marcus Kilgore, Jr. for an 81-yard touchdown. A successful two-point conversion closed the gap to 34-29 with 4:33 left in the third quarter.
The Bulldogs’ defense held firm in the fourth quarter, securing the 34-29 victory.
Star City (1-0) will travel to face the McGehee Owls next Friday, while Dumas (0-1) will host the Hamburg Lions.
