RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – 9-13-24 – The Warren Lumberjacks suffered a tough 49-14 loss to the Elkins Elks on Friday night at Arkansas Tech University in the Arkansas Sports Network High School Football Classic. Despite a fast start, the Lumberjacks couldn’t keep up with Elkins’ opportunistic defense and stout offense, falling to 1-2 on the season.
Warren won the coin toss and got off to a lightning fast starts. A 51-yard rushing touchdown by Tramond Miller, followed by a successful extra point from Jacarlos Marquez, put the Lumberjacks up 7-0 with 11:16 left in the first quarter. The Warren defense followed up with a strong stand, forcing Elkins to punt on their opening drive.
However, Elkins quickly responded when Hunter Smith tipped a Cam Burks pass, returning it for a touchdown. The missed extra point left Warren with a 7-6 lead at the 9:18 mark of the first quarter. Momentum shifted further when the Elks capitalized on a Warren fumble during the next drive, recovering it for a touchdown and taking a 13-7 lead.
Warren had a chance to respond, driving deep into Elks territory before stalling on fourth down. After getting possession back, Elkins added a 32-yard field goal to extend their lead to 16-7 late in the first quarter. The Elks scored again early in the second quarter on a 9-yard touchdown pass, making it 23-7.
Despite a good kickoff return by Neon’dre Thomas, Warren’s offense was plagued by turnovers, including an interception inside the Elkins 5-yard line. Tayshawn Edwards came up big for Warren almost immediately after the turnover, by providing a spark with an interception of his own at the Elkins 24. However, the Lumberjacks failed to convert, turning the ball over on downs. Elkins added a field goal late in the second quarter, taking a 26-7 lead into halftime.
Elkins dominated the second half, scoring on an 18-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ben Napier to Landon Martin and a pick-six, pushing the lead to 42-7 by the middle of the third quarter. Warren managed to get back on the board with a 1-yard touchdown run by Braden Smith late in the third, but Elkins sealed the game with a final 19-yard touchdown pass in the fourth.
Warren now heads into a bye week before starting conference play on the road against DeWitt on September 27. Elkins, improving to 3-0, will also have a bye next week before facing Gentry.
