2.6 Magnitude Earthquake Reported on New Madrid Faultline

HOWARDVILLE, Mo. – A 2.6 magnitude earthquake was confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) early Wednesday morning along the New Madrid Faultline, just north of the Arkansas border in southern Missouri.

The earthquake, which occurred at a depth of approximately 4.7 miles, was recorded at 10:00 PM CST on Tuesday, December 10. The epicenter was located approximately 2.5 miles west-southwest of Howardville, Missouri, at coordinates 36.557 degrees north and 89.648 degrees west.

According to the USGS, this event is part of a series of 25 small earthquakes recorded in the New Madrid Fault region since November 21. Three of these earthquakes were reported within Arkansas, all in the northeastern portion of the state.

The largest earthquake in this series was a 3.0 magnitude event recorded on December 9, also near Howardville, Missouri, approximately 2.5 miles west of the town.
