Jerrell Mack Johnson, age 93, of the Calmer Community on Hwy 63, went to be with the Lord on December 21, 2024 at Chapel Woods Nursing Home in Warren, Arkansas.
Mack was born on March 7, 1931 in Bradley County, Arkansas to William “Shelley” and Oleta “Ruth” Thompson Johnson. He graduated from Warren High School. On May 20, 1950 he wed Martha “Sue” Sims.
After buying and selling chicken and eggs for other companies, Mack and his brother-in-law started Johnson and Knight Poultry and Egg Business in Springhill, Louisiana for 8 years. He sold the business and moved back to Arkansas where he has owned Mack Johnson Farms since 1963, raising cattle, chickens, tomatoes, watermelons, and cantaloupes. He won Cleveland County Farm Family of the Year and State Egg Producer of the Year.
Mack served on several boards: Soil and Water Conservation Board, First Bank of Warren Community Board, Woodlawn School Board, Rison Hospital Board and served as Cleveland County Justice of the Peace. He was a member of Arkansas Cattlemen’s Associations.
He is a present member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as music director for many, many years there and at other churches. Mack also directed music at many area revivals. Mack loved jamming with Harold Culp, grandkids and others singing and playing guitar and harmonica. He loved to coon and squirrel hunt. Equally he enjoyed going to bull sales in Missouri. He loved visiting Branson, Missouri and getting on the country hillbilly music shows. When younger, Mack loved to pitch fast pitch softball. On Sunday afternoons he enjoyed playing basketball and football with friends and children.
In addition to his parents, Mack is preceded in death by his wife, Sue Johnson; his sister, Laura Knight and his brother, Coy Johnson.
Survivors are his brother, Gary (Judy) Johnson of Woodlawn, Arkansas; sister, Janice Henry of Shreveport, Louisiana; daughters, Annette (David) Rushing of Baxter, Tennessee, Dianne (Curtis) Dixon of Birmingham, Alabama and Phyllis (Stuart) Tutt of Ignacio Colorado; sons, Larry (Marilyn) Johnson of Sheridan, Arkansas and Bruce (Debbie) Johnson of Ozark, Missouri. Grandchildren, Jon (Suzanne) Rushing, Kelli (Greg) Montgomery, Chet (Lindsey) Johnson, Kevin (Stacey) Owen, Chad (Melody) Johnson, Josh (Kelli) Wright, Shelley (Ken) Young, Brandon (Britnee) Wright, Thad Davis, Angela Johnson, Leah Tutt. Mack and Sue have 22 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 28, 2024 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Chet Johnson and Bro. Jackie Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Rowell Cemetery by Frazer’s Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Billy Keith Henderson, Dean Cope, Jimmy Shelby, Jeff Monk, Allen Rippy, Jeff Conner. Honorary pallbearers will be Rusty Monk, Doyle Sowheaver, David Stover, G.C. Holloway, Mike Boyett, Joseph Stacks. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, December 27, 2024 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church.
