Doris Lorene Groves Helton, age 89 of Warren, AR went to her heavenly home on Saturday, March 22, 2025. She was born July 6, 1935 in Warren, AR, to the late Jesse Groves and Evia Lea Page Groves. She was a Christian and of the Southern Baptist denomination.
Other than her parents, Doris is preceded in death by her son, Wayne Helton, a granddaughter, Alina Mendenhall, two brothers, Dwayne Groves and Shannon Groves, and two sisters, Ollie Ruth Groves and Loretta Bartrow.
Ones left to cherish their memories with her are her husband of 54 years, Harvey, her daughter Brooke Mendenhall (Matthew), her grandsons, David Mendenhall, who she called Davey, Jackie Helton (Jane), Kip Helton (Lucy), and Jake Helton, granddaughters, Brandy Morman (Josh), and Jennifer Bethel, and quite a few great grandchildren and some great great grandchildren. Her sisters, Vickey Reynolds, Glenna Norman, Shirley Hampton, and Wilma Howard, one brother, Junior Groves, a huge host of nieces and nephews, family, and friends.
Doris was born during the Great Depression and was the oldest of ten children to parents that worked on farms. She often said that while some didn’t like picking cotton, she loved to pick cotton. She loved to help her mother pick berries and help care for her siblings; she liked to dress her two youngest sisters, Vickey and Glenna alike.
Eighty-nine years is long time to witness so many changes throughout the United States.
She worked and raised her son Wayne alone for years. She and Harvey married on November 21, 1970 when Wayne was 15 years old. Three years later in 1973 they were surprised by Brooke. By then Wayne was in the United States Army and during that time you couldn’t just call, so they had to send a telegram that his sister had been born.
Doris enjoyed sitting for hours going through her song books and cook books and sending copies to those that requested them through The Good Old Days Magazine.
She loved to cook and care for her husband and family. If you ever ate at her table she always made enough and variety for a crowd even if only a few were there and her fried pies were the best, she was a great cook. Her personal favorite food was fried catfish.
She worked at the hospital in Dumas, Pine Lodge Nursing Home in Warren, Jack Winter, and LaDonna’s Sportswear in Warren.
She worked in her church office at Southside Baptist Church. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for years. She enjoyed being a homeroom mom and mawmaw when her daughter and grandsons Kip and Jackie were in elementary.
Life is short, it goes by fast not to be with family, to rob yourself and your children of blessings that God has for you all through family.
Doris loved the Lord as she did her family and she would want to know if you have received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Do you have a good relationship with God through his son Jesus Christ, do you live for Him?
I know she would want to see all of her family and friends again one day in Heaven.
