The Lumberjacks improved to 9-3 on the season after a 2-1 showing in the Robinson Invitational. The Pioneers fell to 4-5 with the loss after the game was called in five innings due to inclement weather.
Freshman Ryan Spears toed the rubber for the Jacks and retired Batesville in order in the top of the first. The first five batters for Warren in the bottom half walked and two runs came across before a pitching change. Another run scored on a passed ball before Jude Cathey ripped a two-run double to left field to put the Jacks on top 5-0 after one frame.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the second inning to get within 5-2. However, the Lumberjacks scored seven runs in the third inning to take a 12-2 advantage. AJ Jordan doubled home two runs in the big inning, while errors, two bases-loaded walks, and two passed balls led to the other five runs.
Batesville pushed across three runs in the fourth inning to make the score 12-5 and added two more in the fifth inning to get within 12-7. A strikeout ended the threat with a runner on third before bad weather moved in and the game was called with Warren earning the win.
The Jacks only picked up five hits in the game, but Jordan, Parker O’Neal, and Jude Cathey registered two RBIs apiece. Warren walked 14 times in the game and only struck out three times with Kolby Pope and Bryson Harris each reaching three times on free passes. Jordan swiped two bags, while Pope added another steal.
Spears lasted 3 2/3 innings on the mound and allowed five runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Hayden Cathey finished the game and gave up two runs (one earned) on one hit with one strikeout.
The Lumberjacks return to action on Monday, March 31 with a non-conference tilt at Stuttgart. First pitch against the Ricebirds is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
