Pope, a senior right-hander, did the bulk of the work as he tossed 6 2/3 innings before the pitch count got him and O’Neal came in to record the final out. Pope allowed a few baserunners with four walks and two hit-by-pitches, but struck out 10 while not allowing a hit to move the Lumberjacks to 1-0. O’Neal clinched the 4-0 victory by striking out the final batter of the game.

The contest was scoreless through five innings before the Jacks were able to play four runs in the top of the sixth. Senior Bryson Harris smacked a two-run double to left field to score Hayden Cathey and Nathan Spears to break the deadlock. The lead grew to 3-0 on a fielder’s choice RBI by Antonio Jordan and he came around to score on Tucker McDiarmid’s double to left field to push the score to 4-0.

The Jackrabbits threatened in the home half of the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Pope stranded the three runners with a clutch strikeout. The next frame Lonoke put a runner on third with one out, but he was picked off before a groundout ended the inning.

Harris, Jordan, and Spears led the Orange and Black at the plate with two hits apiece. Harris drove in two, while Jordan and McDiarmid knocked in one run each.

The Lumberjacks host DeWitt in the team’s home opener on Thursday, March 6. First pitch at the Warren Sports Complex is set for 4:30 p.m.
