The Rotary Club of Warren met Tuesday, Oct. 28 for its second and final meeting of the month of October at noon inside First Methodist Church. The crowd heard from Warren High School Junior Rotarians Chloe Sanders and Brian Garcia to kick things off before Rotarian Donna Lawhon introduced her program which included a number of people to talk about the High School LPN Program through SEACBER and UAM College of Technology-Crossett. SEACBEC Director Devin McDiarmid, UAM-CTC Vice Chancellor Dr. Tracy Tucker, Instructor Katie Hernandez, and Instructor Jamie Watson were all in attendance and spoke on the subject. Students Railey Greenwood (Hermitage), Mileigh Tillman (Warren), and Addison McDougald (Warren) were all introduced as well. Dr. Tucker and McDiarmid gave some background on how the program started and specifics. The program is funded completely by grants and allows high school seniors to go through the LPN classes to get a jumpstart on their nursing careers. The program is designed for highly motivated individuals as this program is the same rigorous one that college students go through. The students have to go through the required prerequisites, including becoming a CNA, to qualify. While they still have some high school coursework to complete, the bulk of their time is spent on this program. The students spoke about this and the sacrifices they’ve made to go through this program with almost all of their time devoted to classwork and clinicals. The instructors also spoke very highly of the students and even quizzed them on the spot on a few things to allow the students to show off some of the knowledge they’ve gained already. They answered a few questions to round out the meeting. The Rotary Club of Warren will not meet on the second Tuesday of November as it’s Veteran’s Day (Nov. 11). The club will meet the following week on Nov. 18 and then again on Nov. 25.
