SUMPTER, Ark. – Sumpter Rural Fire Department’s Fire Chief Tracy Glover recently participated in the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb held at the Jack Stephens Center in Little Rock, honoring the fallen heroes of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The annual event challenges participants to climb the equivalent of 110 stories — the height of the World Trade Center towers — in remembrance of the 343 firefighters who lost their lives that day. This was Glover’s first year to take part in the climb, a test of endurance that she described as both physically demanding and deeply emotional.
“During round two, I started having doubts that I could complete it,” Glover shared. “But I met a new friend, Cheryl from Cabot, and we encouraged each other the whole way.”
As fatigue set in during the final rounds, Glover received an unexpected boost of support. Fellow firefighter Shaun Henderson, who had already finished the climb in full firefighting gear, joined her for the final flights, motivating her to push through to the end.
At the finish line, Glover announced that she climbed in honor of Matthew Barnes, Firefighter, Ladder 25, and Michael Mullan, Firefighter, Ladder 12 — both among the fallen on 9/11. She also rang the memorial bell in their memory.
“Every step honored their sacrifice,” Glover said. “It was an experience I’ll never forget.”
She extended her gratitude to Cheryl Adams for supporting her and to Shaun and Shana Henderson for their encouragement throughout the event.
Glover noted that Assistant Fire Chief Terry Glover, her husband, was unable to attend this year due to illness but shared that he would have walked in honor of Brian Hickey, Captain, Rescue 4, and Thomas Holohan, Firefighter, Engine 6.
The Sumpter Rural Fire Department’s current officers include Fire Chief Tracy Glover, Assistant Fire Chief Terry Glover, President Sam Griffin, Vice President Jason Wilson, Secretary Wendy Belin, and Treasurer Marlene Elliott.
The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb stands as a powerful tradition for first responders and supporters across the nation, reminding participants and observers alike of the bravery and sacrifice of those who gave their lives in service.
