Bernice F. Newton Hampton, 1938-2025

Bernice F. Newton Hampton, 87, of Johnsville, passed away November 13, 2025. Born February 19, 1938, to the late Wiley and Artillia “Nellie” Newton. She accepted Christ at an early age and faithfully served the Lord throughout her life. She was a member and Mother of the church at Antioch Baptist Church in Johnsville, AR, where she was known for her steadfast faith, kind heart, and love for her church family.

Bernice was united in marriage to Calvin Hampton, and during that union – prior to their divorce – her beloved daughter, Carolyn Ann Hampton, was born, who preceded her in death.

Throughout her life, Bernice was known for her strong work ethic and loving heart. She was employed for many years at LaDonna Sewing Factory and later with Burlington Coat Factory. She also proudly served the Bradley County community at the soup kitchen as a volunteer and as a grandparent for the Hermitage School District, where she touched the lives of countless children with her warmth, wisdom, and encouragement.

She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star – New Life Chapter #71, cherishing fellowship, service, and community involvement.

Bernice loved spending time with her family, fishing, sewing and quilting. Her home and heart were always open, and her love for family was boundless.

She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Icy Mae Newton Davis, Cora Newton; two brothers, Leon Newton, Sylvester Newton; and one son by heart, Fred Buford.

Survivors include:

  • Her granddaughter, Christina Avery (Rodell) of Fordyce, AR
  • Two great-granddaughters, Quinshea Robinson and Lakelyah Letbetter, both of Fordyce, AR
  • One daughter by heart, Ardella Buford of Chicago, IL
  • Two sisters, Marva Newton Trotter and Renee Newton Hatch, both of Chicago, IL

Funeral service was held November 22 at Greater Hampton Chapel AME Church, Johnsville, AR, with Rev. Isiaih Walker officiating and Rev. James Carroll eulogist. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery, Johnsville, AR. Arrangements by Hammons Funeral Home.
