Railroad Work Being Done in Downtown Warren

Crews work through the cold temperatures last week on train track upgrades near Main Street in Warren.

WARREN, Ark. – A significant amount of railroad maintenance work took place in downtown Warren this past week, drawing the attention of many local residents as crews worked along the tracks and at crossings.

The work is being conducted by the railroad company through a contracted maintenance firm, Trak-Time. Crews have been replacing rail, sleepers (ties), and ballast as part of an extensive effort to upgrade the condition and safety of the line. Within the past year, the railroad has also completed major improvements to several roadway crossings, including the Main Street crossing. Maintenance of public crossings is the responsibility of the railroad.

The rail line serving Warren and connecting Monticello to the PotlatchDeltic facility is owned by Union Pacific Railroad. Federal filings with the Surface Transportation Board list Union Pacific as the owner and lessor of the “Warren Line,” which runs between Dermott and Warren, as well as the Potlatch Spur off the Cypress Bend Industrial Lead.

The line is leased and operated by Arkansas Midland Railroad Company, Inc. (AKMD), a short-line railroad that is part of the Genesee & Wyoming family of railroads.

The recent work is part of ongoing infrastructure maintenance designed to ensure safe and reliable rail service for Warren’s industrial users and the surrounding region.
