The Yellowjackets (8-10) out hit the Jacks (6-7) by a count of 10-9 in the game and didn’t strike out during the game while reaching base via walk 11 times. Warren drew six walks and was hit by a pitch four times as both teams had plenty of traffic on the basepaths.
Sheridan scored two in the opening frame on a sacrifice fly and error before the Orange and Black scored two in the bottom half on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch by Ty Hembree and wild pitch. Logan Case smoked a line drive up the middle that found the Sheridan pitcher’s glove to keep the game tied at 2-2. However, the Yellowjackets broke things open with an eight-run inning in the following frame with the help of five hits, including a grand slam, and four walks.
However, Warren would not go quietly as the team loaded the bases with no outs after two singles and a walk. The first run of the inning came home when Ren Reep was hit with a pitch and, after a pitching change, Jackson Denton laced a double down the left-field line to score two more. Another walk loaded the bases, but the next hitter hit into a double play. The Jacks scored a run on the play to get within 10-6, but the two outs were more valuable to Sheridan as a fly out to center field ended the threat.
Sheridan wouldn’t score the next two frames as the home team cut into the deficit further with an RBI double by Aceen Jurado in the third inning and a solo homer by Denton in the fourth to put the score at 10-8. The Yellowjackets hit a solo shot in the fifth to extend the lead to 11-8 and scored two more in the sixth inning to take a 13-8 advantage.
The Jacks entered the final frame down by five, but a two-run long ball over the left-field fence by Tucker McDiarmid got the team within 13-10. The comeback attempt would end there as the next two hitters couldn’t reach base to clinch a 13-10 non-conference win for Sheridan.
McDiarmid, Denton, and Chris Barnes registered multi-hit efforts for the Jacks with Denton driving in three runs and McDiarmid recording two RBIs. Barnes and McDiarmid both scored three times. Denton started on the mound for Warren and was relieved by McDiarmid, Madden Bryant, and Barnes.
The Lumberjacks are back in action on Tuesday, April 14 in a conference matchup at Watson Chapel. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
