MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team has altered its three-game GAC series with the Tigers of East Central University due to forecasted inclement weather in Monticello over the weekend. The Boll Weevils are now set to host the Tigers on Thursday, April 16, at 6:00 p.m., with the series finale doubleheader set for 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 17.
LAST MEETING
The Weevils swept the Tigers last season in Ada, 11-0 (8 innings), 15-3 (seven innings), 11-1. The Boll Weevil offense jumped on the gas pedal early in the series opener, scoring seven runs in the second inning. UAM saw runs plated on two two-run home runs from Cade Cancilla and Justin Santoyo, two RBI doubles from Aidan Garrett and Chaz Poppy, and an RBI triple from Kirk Woolf. Woolf’s triple is his sixth on the year, tying the single-season record set by Shannon Rushing in the 1999 season. Elijah Nichols and Kirk Woolf extended the lead for UAM in the third and fourth innings, each launching solo home runs to left-center field. The drives made it 9-0. A bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the eighth, followed by an RBI from Aidan Garrett in the top of the eighth, increased the Weevil lead to 11-0. The Tigers were unable to respond in the bottom of the inning, allowing UAM to win the series opener. Arkansas-Monticello scored first in game two, putting three runs on the board in the second. Cade Cancilla drove in the first on a triple to left center and eventually scored on an error. Roc Hawthorne drove in the third on a single to make it a 3-0 game. The Tigers grabbed one back in the bottom of the inning, scoring on an RBI single of their own. UAM put up four more in the third, seeing a single and two doubles from the Boll Weevils. Elijah Nichols drove in the first run of the inning on a single to center. Aidan Garret and Cade Cancilla each had a double, with Garrett’s scoring one and Cancilla’s plating two. East Central scored two runs in the fourth on an RBI single and a wild pitch. The Boll Weevils pushed their lead by seven in the sixth. Justin Santoyo drove in the first of the inning on a single through the four-hole, Chaz Poppy crossed the plate on a ground ball from Camden Tanner, and Elijah Nichols grabbed three RBI with a blast over the left field wall. Cade Cancilla hit a solo shot for the final run, putting him a single shy of a cycle. Roc Hawthorne drove in the final run of the game in the seventh with a solo home run of his own. The Tigers were unable to respond in the bottom of the inning, resulting in a run-rule victory for UAM. UAM outscored the Tigers 11 runs to one in game three. Cade Cancilla drove in the first run of the ballgame on a single down the right field line in the second. The Boll Weevils scored three in the third. Kirk Woolf drove in the first on a solo home run down the left field line. Camden Tanner and Elijah Nichols each grabbed an RBI on doubles down the left field line to make it a 4-1 game. The Tigers scored a lone run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly. Arkansas-Monticello saw five runs cross the plate in the fifth. Camden Tanner drove in Chaz Poppy on a fly ball to right, followed by a two-run single from Aidan Garrett. Roc Hawthorne brought home the fourth and fifth innings on a triple to right, extending the lead to 9-1. UAM saw the final two runs of the game in the seventh, with the first scoring on an error and the second on a bases-loaded walk. The game would conclude with an 11-1 victory for UAM and a 3-0 sweep on the weekend. Connor Irvine, Maxim Mrakovcic, and Tyler Bribiescas took the wins in games one, two, and three, respectively.
ALL-TIME SERIES
Arkansas-Monticello leads the Tigers in the all-time series 31-9. The squads first met in March of 2003, a 5-0 win for the Boll Weevils. The longest win streak is 14 games, an ongoing streak that began in March of 2021. The largest margin of victory for the men in green and white came via a 14-0 decision in February of 2024. At home, the Weevils are 16-0, in Ada, they are 15-9, with a 30-8 overall conference record. Through 40 games played, Arkansas-Monticello has plated 327 runs for an 8.18 average of runs per game.
LAST TIME OUT FOR THE WEEVILS
The Weevils fell to Ouachita Baptist on Tuesday, April 14. After opening the game with a tremendous offensive display, UAM would drop the contest, 13-12, in nine innings. Camden Tanner and Daniel Lizarraga hit back-to-back home runs for UAM to begin the contest, while Jackson Riedling recorded UAM’s third home run four batters later. Tanner leads the Weevils in home runs with 13 overall on the season.
