WARREN, Ark. — Bradley County Park was filled with young anglers and outdoor enthusiasts recently as the annual Great Outdoor Youth Day brought together youth and Extension personnel from Bradley, Cleveland, and Dallas counties for a day focused on fishing, wildlife education, and outdoor recreation.
A highlight of the event was the pond, which was stocked with approximately 500 catfish by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Participants were given the opportunity to fish throughout the day and keep any fish they caught.
In addition to fishing, youth rotated through a variety of interactive educational stations located throughout the park.
Representatives from the Delta Rivers Nature Center introduced participants to Gonzo, an injured owl that has been rehabilitated by the center’s staff. The presentation allowed youth to learn more about wildlife conservation and animal rehabilitation efforts in Arkansas.
David West and Austin Compton of Cleveland County led sessions teaching participants how to identify venomous and non-venomous snakes. They also displayed animal pelts and discussed wildlife commonly found throughout the state. Their lessons encouraged youth to explore and appreciate Arkansas’ natural resources and outdoor opportunities.
Rayvin Humphries of Dallas County was available throughout the event to assist young anglers with casting techniques and answer questions about fishing.
Lunch was provided by a local 4-H volunteer, who grilled hot dogs for participants and their families.
Organizers said the annual event continues to provide young people with hands-on outdoor experiences while fostering an appreciation for nature, conservation, and the recreational opportunities available across south Arkansas. For many participants, the day also created lasting memories shared with family and friends.
