Fort Smith, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team continued its road stretch Monday evening with a match-up against the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Boll Weevils fell to the Lions in three sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-20.
FIRST SET (25-16 UAFS, UAFS leads 1-0)
Arkansas-Monticello battled early in the opening set, with Jalen Scroggins recording a kill before the Boll Weevils took advantage of back-to-back UAFS attack errors to even the score at 3-3. Sophia Grubbs followed with a pair of kills to keep UAM within three at 7-4 and 7-5. Grubbs added another kill to make it 10-6 before Monticello continued to chip away at the deficit. Kylie Miller delivered a service ace to bring the Weevils within five at 16-11, while Scroggins followed with another kill to make it 15-9. UAM found momentum late in the frame as Ja’Miah Thomas recorded a block before Isabella Garcia connected for a kill, cutting the UAFS advantage to 18-15. Garcia added another kill to bring Monticello to 16 points, but the Lions closed out the opening set, 25-16.
SECOND SET (25-20 UAFS, UAFS leads 2-0)
Arkansas-Monticello battled early in the second set, with Sophia Grubbs recording three kills to keep the Boll Weevils within three at 9-6. Grubbs continued the attack with two more kills before teaming up with Kylie Miller for a block to bring UAM within one at 10-9. Another kill from Grubbs made it 11-10, keeping Monticello close midway through the frame. The Lions extended their advantage to 18-12, but Isabella Garcia answered with a kill before Jalen Scroggins added one of her own to make it 19-14. Grubbs followed with back-to-back kills as UAM continued to chip away at the deficit, bringing the Weevils within four at 20-16. Monticello then found momentum at the net, with Miller teaming up with Ella Cline for a block before Garcia and Miller combined for another to cut the UAFS lead to 21-19. UAM reached 20 points late in the frame, but the Lions held off the Boll Weevils’ comeback to take the second set, 25-20.
THIRD SET (25-20 UAFS, UAFS wins 3-0)
Arkansas-Monticello opened the third set strong, with Sophia Grubbs recording the first point of the frame before adding another kill to help the Weevils stay within one at 3-2. Isabella Garcia followed with a kill to make it 5-4 before adding another to bring UAM within one at 7-6. Grubbs then connected for back-to-back kills to even the set at 7-7 and later helped Monticello pull within two at 10-8. Summer Stephens and Grubbs added kills as UAM continued to battle, while a service ace helped the Weevils cut the deficit to one at 12-11. Jalen Scroggins followed with a kill to make it 13-12 before Garcia added another to keep UAM within two at 15-13. Ja’Miah Thomas connected for a kill to bring Monticello within three at 17-14, and Grubbs followed with another to make it 18-15. UAM continued to fight late, reaching 20 points behind a service ace, but Arkansas-Fort Smith held off the Weevils to take the third set, 25-20, and close out the match in three sets.
