Bradley County 4-H has a busy October ahead, with National 4-H Week, club meetings, educational programs, the Arkansas State Fair and several special events scheduled throughout the month.
National 4-H Week will be observed Oct. 4-10, highlighting local clubs, youth leadership, learning and community service. The Bradley County 4-H October newsletter also announced that enrollment and re-enrollment are now open for the new 4-H year through ZSuite. Those needing assistance may contact the Bradley County Extension Office at (870) 226-8410.
The newsletter also included a message of appreciation following the Bradley County Fair. RJ Martin and Penny Waits thanked buyers, sponsors, EHC members, community supporters and 4-H exhibitors who helped make the fair possible.
“We are grateful to every buyer, sponsor, EHC member, community supporter, and 4-H exhibitor who helped make the fair unforgettable,” the message stated, noting that support for the fair helps local youth and extension programs.
Regular club activities this month include Archery Club meetings on Oct. 6 and 20 at 4 p.m. at the Bradley County Fair Grounds. Cooking Club is scheduled for Oct. 12 and 20, FBC Clubs for Oct. 13 and Sewing Club for Oct. 22. Participants should check their individual club schedules for additional time and location information.
October’s special events begin with the Bradley County Riding Club Open Arena from 5-9 p.m. on Oct. 3. A Master Gardeners Fall Pruning Presentation is scheduled for Oct. 13, followed by the Ouachita District Rally in Benton on Oct. 15. The Arkansas State Fair will run Oct. 16-25.
Several activities are planned for Oct. 19, including the Fall Kids Chef Challenge, “Fall into Soup,” and a Cover Crew/Simple Simmons Pizza Making program at 8:30 a.m. Registration or additional information is available through the Extension Office.
Other events include a Rawls Family Farm visit on Oct. 21 and a Superstars Citizenship Meeting at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 26 featuring Mayor Reep and Judge McKinney. A Durable Skills Workshop is scheduled for Oct. 27 at Drew Central High School.
Bradley County 4-H will close out the month with a table at Truck or Treat in downtown Warren from 6-8 p.m. on Oct. 31.
The October newsletter also offered seasonal advice for area livestock producers. The Extension Service recommends preparing cattle for winter by gradually transitioning them to richer cool-season forage, completing fall herd-health checks, monitoring respiratory issues and body condition, and planning mineral or supplemental feed needs.
Producers are also advised to limit cattle access to oak trees when possible because acorns can be toxic to livestock and may cause severe kidney damage.
For information about 4-H activities, soil testing, forage analysis or winter feed planning, contact the Bradley County Extension Office at (870) 226-8410.
