UAM sports prepare to launch spring 2023 campaigns

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello Athletics Department is ready to kick off the 2023 spring semester. With basketball returning from break to continue their seasons, as well as golf opening their spring stretch and both baseball and softball opening their seasons.

The UAM Men’s Basketball team comes back from winter break with a 5-5 overall record and a 1-3 start to their Great American Conference run. The team returns to the court on Thursday, January 5 when they travel to Weatherford, Oklahoma to take on GAC member Southwestern Oklahoma State University in the first game of their Oklahoma road trip. The game is set to begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Weevils have been led by newcomers Edwin Louis and Isaac Jackson, who currently lead the team in scoring with 137 and 126 total points on the season. Louis averages 13.7 points per game, while Jackson averages 12.6 points. Returner Josh Denton leads the Weevils in shots from beyond-the-arc with 27 total threes on the year; hitting for a .600 percentage. Timur Krupalija leads the team in rebounds, pulling in 16 offensive and 40 defensive rebounds for a total of 56.

The Weevils come off of a 61-56 loss to Ouachita Baptist University and look to ring in the new year with a win or two as they head to Oklahoma.

The UAM Women’s Basketball team returns from their winter break with a 4-6 overall record and a 1-3 start to their Great American Conference run. The team also returns to the court on Thursday, January 5 on Weatherford, Oklahoma to take on GAC member Southwestern Oklahoma State University in the first game of their Oklahoma road trip. The game is set to tip off at 5:30.

Returning sophomore Bailey Harris has been on a tear, leading the way for the Blossoms with 150 total points on the season with an average of 15 points per game. Joi Montgomery has led the Blossoms in rebounds, snagging 17 offensive and 50 defensive rebounds on the year. Freshman Alindsey Long has proven to be the top shooter from three-point territory, putting in 16 threes on the year. Three Blossoms are tied for assists so far on the season with 14 each going to Nyah Banks, Azaria Hulbert, and Joi Montgomery.

The Blossoms head to Oklahoma with two straight wins and look to increase their win streak.

Both the Weevils Baseball and Blossoms Softball teams open their seasons on Friday, February 4. The Weevils travel to Clinton, Mississippi for the first game of their three game series with Mississippi College and the Blossoms travel to Hot Springs, Arkansas to take on both Northeastern State University and Missouri Southern State University for the first two games of the Mike McGhee/Ronnie Hawkins Classic. The Weevils are set to play at 3:00 p.m. and the Blossoms are schedules for 2:00 and 4:30 p.m.

The Arkansas-Monticello baseball team enters its thirteenth season under head coach John Harvey, with Associate Head Coach Mark Jelks returning for his ninth season with the program. The Weevils are coming off a 23-24 overall and 17-16 GAC performance in the 2022 season after being knocked out of the conference tournament by Harding University.

The UAM Softball team heads into its fifth season under the helm head coach Kyle Lem. The Blossoms finished the 2022 season with a 17-33 overall and 11-21 performance in GAC play after being knocked out of the conference tournament by Arkansas Tech University.

Arkansas-Monticello has their Men’s and Women’s Golf teams returning for the second half of their 2022-2023 seasons. The Weevils will be returning to the course on Monday, February 13 when they enter day one of the Houston Classic at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas. The tournament is being hosted by GAC member Southern Nazarene University. The Blossoms begin their spring season in Cabot, Arkansas on Monday, February 27 as the head into day one of the Natural State Classic at Cypress Creek at Greystone. The tournament is held by in-state GAC member Harding University.
