Questions remain over the fate of the former Martin’s Department Store lot, as discussed during Monday’s Bradley County Chamber of Commerce lot.
Ownership of the property came into question immediately after the historic building built around 1904 burned to the ground several years ago. Jeff Goad owned the Words On A Shirt business that occupied the building at the time of the fire.

The city of Warren paid for asbestos removal, demolition and removal of debris but placed a $130,000 property lien to recoup those expenses. According to Mayor Gregg Reep, the lien was filed at the Bradley County Courthouse prior to the state holding a tax auction on the property.
During the auction, a New Jersey buyer apparently paid back taxes on the property to claim it but was not given notice of the lien, which is still in effect. Reep said the new owner made a request that the city dismiss the lien, which was denied. No action has been taken to satisfy the lien.
The owner is responsible for maintenance of the property. Activities have been held on the lot with Make Warren Shine, Chamber and city crews working on upkeep of the property.
Chamber Executive Director Terrie White said she would attempt to contact the property owner to gain permission to use it. Market On Main is still scheduled from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. this Saturday on the lot. There will be 22 vendors and one food truck.
Also at the Chamber board meeting:
- White reported three new members: Heritage Poultry, Cathy Richardson and SEARK Electrical Solutions.
- Board members present were James Wells, Estephany Roman, Jane Harris, Dana Harvey, Kim Forrest and JeNelle Lipton. Vice President Harvey presided over the meeting.
- A $5,000 grant was received.
- Trunk or Treat will be combined with Market On Main on Oct. 21. In the event of rain, it will be held at the Bradley County Fairgrounds.
- A motion was approved to accept changes in the bylaws.
- Anita Shaw-Tenner was recognized from Madea’s Restaurant. Steve Mahanes also represented AHF at the meeting. Local businessman Jim Houston also attended. Charlotte Tenner-Brown represented the mayor’s office.
