John’Niqua Libbett spearheaded the effort along with officers Bryce McKinney, Lee Van Brown, Keith Thompson and Jonathan Cox, dispatcher Larenda Green, Hugh Connor of S&H Tactical and Libbett’s Aunt Angela Curry-Hodge of Georgia.
They donated about $300 which was used to buy backpacks, pencils, colored pencils, erasers, notebook paper, tablets, crayons, markers and folders.
Those items will be placed in police units and each child will be given a backpack. There are currently about 32 backpacks planned for distribution.
Libbett said she had done such services for individual families before but this is her first community-wide effort.
