WARREN, Ark. – With temperatures climbing past 95°F in much of the state, the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service is reminding gardeners that summer is officially here—and it’s a critical time for planting and planning in the garden.
According to their July gardening update, hot weather can slow plant production, so proper crop selection and timing are key. For Arkansas gardeners, July is still a productive month, and the Extension Service has released a helpful planting guide to keep gardens thriving throughout the heat.
The vegetable garden planting list for July includes:
- Basil
- Irish Potatoes
- Tomatoes
- Southern Peas
- Sweet Corn
- Cucumbers
- Pumpkins
- Summer Squash
- Winter Squash
- Pak Choi
- Bok Choy
- Cabbage
- Collards
Meanwhile, flower enthusiasts can brighten their landscapes with heat-tolerant varieties such as:
- Daisies
- Sunflowers
- Zinnias
- Cosmos
- Marigolds
- Black-Eyed Susans
- Coneflowers
- Lantana
- Pentas
Gardeners can find more detailed information about planting in July by visiting the Extension’s website at https://www.uaex.uada.edu/yard-garden/garden-guides/july.aspx.
As always, the Extension Service notes that these recommendations are general guidelines. They advise anyone with questions about specific local conditions to reach out to their county extension agent, which can be done through uaex.uada.edu/counties.
The July planting guide is part of the ongoing outreach efforts from the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture to help Arkansans make the most of their home gardens.
