Prior to the game the Lumberjacks honored the team’s three seniors that include Reep, Zech Bush, and Jude Cathey. The win for Warren moves the team to 7-2 in 4A-8 Conference action and an 11-7 overall mark. Hamburg falls to 7-3 in conference games and 11-11-1 overall. Monticello won their game over Crossett 16-5 and sets up a matchup on Thursday, April 30 for the conference crown in Warren.
The bulk of the offensive action took place early in the contest with a leadoff triple by Hamburg coming around to score on a groundout to put the visitors on the scoreboard. However, Warren responded with a big bottom half of the inning. A one-out single by Reep was followed with walks by Jackson Denton and Cathey to load the bases. Parker O’Neal singled home two runs for a 2-1 lead and a third run scored on an RBI infield single by Ty Hembree. The bases were still loaded with one out, but the Jacks couldn’t add more.
The Lions turned a leadoff hit-by-pitch into a run in the second with another RBI groundout to cut the score to 3-2. Hamburg would go on to tie the game in the third frame with a leadoff home run. The game remained 3-3 until the bottom of the fourth when Chris Barnes drew a leadoff walk and was bunted to second base. He moved to third base on a fly ball to set up Reep’s two-out, go-ahead RBI base hit to give the Orange and Black a 4-3 advantage.
Reep’s run-scoring single wound up being the game-winning RBI as Hamburg went down in order in the fifth inning, stranded a runner at third base in the sixth inning, and could only muster a two-out double in the seventh inning. A lineout to Jax Callaway in right field for the third out of the seventh inning sealed the 4-3 victory for the Jacks.
The complete-game effort from Reep featured three runs allowed on five hits with two walks and one strikeout. He also had two hits at the plate, scored a run, and drove in the game-winning tally. O’Neal also collected two hits in the game with two huge RBIs in the bottom of the first inning.
The 4A-8 Championship will be on the line in Thursday’s game against Monticello, which was originally scheduled for last Friday, but couldn’t be played due to weather. First pitch from the Warren City Complex is set for 5 p.m.
