Brunson Elementary teacher selected for statewide teaching fellowship

WARREN, Ark. — A Warren educator has been recognized among the state’s top teachers, earning selection into the inaugural Arkansas Excellence in Teaching Fellowship.

Mrs. Sonya Taylor, a fifth-grade teacher at Thomas C. Brunson Elementary School, was named one of 23 educators statewide chosen by the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) following a competitive application process. The program highlights high-performing K-12 teachers across Arkansas and provides opportunities for professional growth and collaboration.

According to the ADE, the nine-month fellowship began in summer 2025 and runs through May 2026. Participants engage in virtual convenings designed to strengthen classroom practices, promote the teaching profession, and deepen understanding of the state’s Merit Teacher Incentive Fund.

“We launched the Arkansas Excellence in Teaching Fellowship to recognize some of the highest-performing K-12 educators in the state,” said Arkansas Department of Education Secretary Jacob Oliva. “This unique program is not only a reward for their excellence in the classroom, but a unique opportunity for them to grow professionally, build lasting connections, and make an even greater impact in their schools and communities.”

Taylor is among a select group of teachers who are also recipients of the Merit Teacher Incentive Fund. Fellows receive training and support to share their experiences publicly while collaborating with peers from across Arkansas. Each participant also receives a $1,500 stipend.

“Arkansas is fortunate to be home to brilliant educators who make tremendous gains with their students,” said Brandie Benton, ADE Assistant Commissioner for Teacher Effectiveness and Licensure. “We’re excited to introduce this new opportunity for teachers to connect with each other from across the state, share their best practices, and make more people aware of the progress they’re advancing in our schools.”

The Warren School District recognized Taylor’s achievement in a recent social media post, congratulating her on being selected for the fellowship and noting her impact in the classroom.

The Arkansas Excellence in Teaching Fellowship is operated in collaboration with Each Day Communications and aims to spotlight outstanding educators while encouraging continued professional development and public engagement within the field of education.
