More than 200 acres burn in wildfire south of Sumpter

Bradley County firefighters spent long hours Saturday battling a wildfire that burned more than 200 acres south of Sumpter.

Crews were called to the fire along County Road 45, where multiple area fire departments worked throughout the day to bring the blaze under control.

As of approximately 5 p.m. Saturday, crews known to be on the scene included the Sumpter Fire Department, Bradley County Rural Fire Department, Banks Fire Department, Hermitage Fire Department and Warren Fire Department. Additional departments or personnel may also have assisted.

According to multiple firefighters at the scene, preliminary estimates indicated that more than 200 acres had burned, with the total acreage possibly higher.

By around 5 p.m., the fire appeared to be under control, allowing some crews to begin leaving the scene.

The Arkansas Forestry Division was also on the scene assisting with the wildfire, along with the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office.

The fire comes amid extremely dry conditions that have increased wildfire concerns across Bradley County and much of south Arkansas.
