Weevils drop first game of Conference Tournament to Henderson State

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – After taking down Southern Arkansas, the regular season champions, 2-1, in their final GAC series of the year, the Weevils Baseball team came in to the 2022 Great American Conference Tournament with all eyes on them. UAM opened up their post season with a match-up against Henderson State University. The game would go scoreless for the first 5.5 innings, before UAM eventually fell to the Reddies, 2-1.

After 5.5 scoreless innings of baseball, the Reddies were the first team to put a run on the board; scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Trevor Rugg pinch hit to lead off the ninth inning; hitting a frozen rope over the second baseman’s head to put a man on base. Grant Jeffers pinch ran for Rugg, making his way to third base on a bunt and wild pitch. A perfect bunt from Chase Cripps would score Jeffers to tie the game at 1-1 as the inning eventually came to a close.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Henderson State took the win with a walk off hit down in deep right field.

Pitching Performances
Spencer Johnston, a senior pitcher for the Weevils, started on the mound, dishing out 8 innings of work. He struck out six batters, allowing 3 hits and only 1 run.
Mason Philley took the mound in the bottom of the ninth, giving up 2 hits in his appearance.

Chase Cripps – 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Grant Shepherd – 2-for-4 on the day.
