Joseph Grady “J.G.” Howsen

Joseph Grady “J.G.†Howsen, age 89, of Warren, AR, passed away April 30, 2024, at home with his wife and children surrounding him. He was born and raised in the Pleasant Valley Community.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother-Grady Hamilton Howsen and Annie Horn Howsen and four sisters, Onnie Mae Evans, Marjorie Adair, Zelma Burch Bailey, and Lea Ila Dawkins.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Sue McKinney Howsen; one son James Grady “Joey†Howsen of Warren, AR; and 6 daughters Cindy Wagnon of Warren, AR, Deborah Simpson of Warren, AR, Paula Broome of Warren, AR, Belinda Hollis of Hamburg, AR, Melody Spears of New Edinburg, AR, and Angela Epps of Calion, AR; 23 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Shirley Howsen Lee.

He was a member of Pleasant Valley Freewill Baptist Chruch.

J.G. was a veteran who served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. While stationed in Germany, he played basketball and his name was carved on a wall as having scored the most points in a game. He also served for several years in the National Guard.

He loved hunting, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren. J.G. was a loving Dad and grandpa who was always willing to help someone in need.

He worked many years in the logwoods. His father taught him when he was a teenager how to cut logs with a power saw. By the time he was a young man, he could cut and lay a tree wherever you wanted it laid.

Many people would call upon J.G. to cut a tree that seemed impossible to take down, but with his experience and skills it became possible. 

Grandsons were pallbearers Josh Spears, Blake Spears, Jared Spears, Kyle Wagnon, Cole Brown, Joseph Simpson, Patrick Simpson, Kody Jonio, Hadden Jonio. Honorary pallbearers were The Pleasant valley FWB-Senior and Adult Sunday School class.

Funeral service was held 2:00PM Friday, May 3rd 2024 at Frazer’s Chapel. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery by Frazer’s Funeral Home
