EL DORADO, Ark. – Firefighters and emergency management officials remained on the scene Friday morning of a major wildfire in the Lawson community that has burned an estimated 2,200 acres.

The wildfire is burning southwest of Moro Bay State Park and west of Strong, according to information available to Saline River News. Smoke from the blaze has been reported in surrounding counties.

Union County Judge Mike Loftin reported Friday morning that the fire was estimated to be approximately 20 to 30 percent contained.

The Arkansas Forestry Commission is assisting with aerial firefighting efforts, with Loftin reporting that planes had made 12 water drops on the fire. Eight bulldozers were also being used in efforts to contain the blaze.

Additional information released Friday morning by ProMed Ambulance indicated there had been no reported injuries as of the morning briefing.

“We are pleased to report no injuries as of this morning’s briefing,” ProMed Ambulance stated.

Heavy smoke continues to affect the Lawson area, and officials are discouraging unnecessary travel.

“Travel in the area is still discouraged as heavy smoke conditions still persist,” ProMed Ambulance stated.

Because of air quality concerns, residents in the affected area are being encouraged to remain indoors as much as possible.

Several road closures also remain in place, including Pine Tree Road. Motorists are encouraged to avoid the area while emergency crews continue working.

The wildfire comes amid extremely hot and dry conditions that have contributed to elevated wildfire danger across southern Arkansas. Smoke from the fire has traveled beyond the immediate Lawson area and has been reported in surrounding counties.

Emergency officials continue to monitor the situation and support firefighting operations.

Saline River News will continue to follow the Lawson wildfire and provide updates as additional information becomes available.
