Star City’s Jimmy Brown Elementary School art teacher Suzi Davis has been selected as the 2021 Arkansas Elementary Art Educator of the Year.
Davis will be presented with this award at the Arkansas Art Educators annual fall conference held at the Wyndham Riverfront in North Little Rock on November 4. Friends and family are welcome to attend this event.
Davis is currently in her 30th year of teaching art, 24 of those years have been at Jimmy Brown Elementary in the Star City School District. She received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.
Earlier this semester Davis was awarded a $500 Arkansas Art Educators Presidents Foundation classroom grant. The grant will pay for the purchase of materials and art supplies needed for the lesson that will benefit over 300 students.
Davis will use the grant to fund an educational lesson for third through fifth graders to study the art of contemporary artist Sandra Silberweig, particularly her portrait series. Students will draw inspiration from Silberweig’s work to explore a sense of self and self-expression as they create their own self-portrait.
