The Warren Street Committee met Monday night to discuss several street improvement items of business.
Chairwoman Emily Moseley was joined by Alderman Joel Tolefree on the committee. Also present were Mayor Denisa Pennington and Street Foreman Monty Hearnsberger.
They discussed the possibility of receiving state aid funds that could pave two to three streets. Moseley suggested using the funds to pave Etheridge Street, with others to be considered later. Additional street paving will be using CARES Act funding, with $400,000 projected for the next year’s budget, although that hasn’t passed the City Council yet.

Hearnsberger said it would cost $63,443 to mill streets but full paving could cost up to $300,000 per mile.
In other action:
- Committee members noted that there is currently no ordinance against putting leaves or tree limbs in city ditches, although that could cause some drainage issues. There is an ordinance that prohibits burning items in ditches. It was suggested that the ordinance could be amended to prohibit placing leaves and limbs in the ditches.
- Street cuts made by utility companies or residents were addressed. Currently, the city charges $150 for a half-cut of a street and $200 for brick streets under an ordinance approved in 2011. Hearnsberger suggested amending the ordinance because of rising construction costs, with $300 for a half-cut and $500 for a full cut or brick streets.
- Speed bumps on Cedar Street were discussed but no action was recommended.
No formal action was taken on any of the recommendations, pending City Council approval.
