The Lumberjacks improve to 13-4 overall on the season and 5-1 in conference action. Watson Chapel falls to 4-9 and 0-5 in 4A-8 play. Warren outhit the Wildcats 7-1 and freshman Ryan Spears tossed all five innings on the mound with four strikeouts.
The right-hander walked the bases loaded with no outs to begin the game to give the visitors a prime scoring opportunity. However, a strikeout, popup to second, and groundball allowed Spears to wiggle out of the frame unscathed.
The Jacks started quickly as well with a single by AJ Jordan, who scored on a double to the left-field wall by Kolby Pope. Pope came around to score on a single by Bryson Harris to put the home team on top 2-0 after one. Jude Cathey led off the second inning with a single and scored on a groundout by Parker O’Neal to push the lead to 3-0.
Warren got the big inning it needed in the bottom of the fourth when the team scored 8 runs on only three hits. Jude Cathey singled home one run in the frame while Nathan Spears picked up an RBI on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. Pope doubled home two more runs in the frame as well as the Orange and Black led 11-0 by the time the dust settled. The Wildcats put the leadoff runner on, but couldn’t score in the top of the fifth to seal the victory for Warren.
Pope and Jude Cathey led the offense with two hits apiece, while Hayden Cathey added a double. Jordan, Pope, and Ren Reep scored two runs each to lead the team.
The Lumberjacks travel to Star City Thursday, April 17 for another important conference matchup. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
