WARREN, Ark. – Students participating in the Bradley County Medical Center’s summer MASH (Medical Applications of Science for Health) program recently engaged in a variety of hands-on activities aimed at exposing them to real-world health care and emergency response careers.

As part of the program, the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office visited to demonstrate the dangers and consequences of impaired driving. Sheriff Herschel Tillman, along with Deputies Paul Outlaw and Anthony Gallegos, led students through a series of activities focused on awareness and prevention. Outlaw, an Advanced Roadside Impairment Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) deputy, demonstrated standard field sobriety tests used to assess impairment. Students tried the walk-and-turn test first under normal conditions and then repeated it wearing impairment goggles to simulate the effects of intoxication.

Participants also navigated a curved road course in a golf cart—first without goggles, then with the impairment goggles on—to experience the real-life difficulty of driving while impaired. Sheriff Tillman thanked the Bradley County Medical Center for including the Sheriff’s Office in the camp and expressed appreciation to Dr. Bradley Biggers for allowing the use of his golf cart.

Additionally, students had the opportunity to visit Pafford Air One, where they learned about START triage and the role of flight crews in emergency medical response. The visit provided valuable insight into the fast-paced and critical work of air EMS teams.

“These future healthcare heroes spent the day learning about START triage and gaining insight into the critical role our flight crews play in the EMS system,” Pafford Air One shared in a statement.

The BCMC MASH program continues to serve as an engaging and impactful educational opportunity for local students interested in health care and public safety careers.
