Volleyball Drops Home Opener to Arkansas-Fort Smith

MONTICELLO, Ark. – The University of Arkansas at Monticello volleyball team returned home Tuesday evening for a non-conference matchup with Arkansas-Fort Smith.

FIRST SET (25-18 UAFS, UAFS leads 1-0)

The two teams traded points throughout the opening set, with Arkansas-Monticello holding several early advantages behind kills from Sophia Grubbs, Summer Stephens, and Isabella Garcia. Arkansas-Fort Smith began to create separation, using a 5-1 run to take a 17-13 advantage. UAM pulled within three at 19-16, but the Lions answered with five straight points to move ahead 24-16, eventually closing the set, 25-18.

SECOND SET (25-16 UAFS, UAFS leads 2-0)

UAFS opened the second set with a 4-1 advantage, but the Blossoms gradually worked their way back. The Lions responded by taking three of the next four points before UAM cut the deficit to 15-14 following a block from Kylie Miller and Evalyn Dang. Arkansas-Fort Smith then scored six consecutive points to build a 21-14 advantage. Garcia added two late kills for the Blossoms, but UAFS closed out the frame, 25-16.

THIRD SET (25-17 UAFS, UAFS wins 3-0)

Arkansas-Monticello came out strong in the third set, opening with kills from Garcia, Grubbs, and Scroggins before an ace from Maelie Cooke gave the Blossoms a 4-1 lead. A 7-1 stretch from the Lions pushed UAFS ahead 8-5. Kyonias Chambers grabbed an ace, followed by kills from Garcia and Stephens, helping the Blossoms draw even at 12-12. The Lions eventually pushed on to take the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-0.

– Isabella Garcia finished with nine kills while recording a season-high 25 digs.

– Allyson Rosa saw 18 digs, her second straight game with double-digits

– Sophia Grubbs is three kills shy of 200 in her career at UAM

– Jalen Scroggins is 25 kills short of 300 in her career at UAM, and one dig shy of 100.

– Maelie Cooke crossed 270 career digs (271)

UP NEXT

The Blossoms travel to Bolivar, Missouri, this weekend to compete in the SBU Invitational. UAM will play two games on Friday, with the first against Christian Brothers at 9:00 a.m., followed by game two against Drury at 1:00 p.m.
