Warren Aviation Commission tables security gate proposal, hears airport maintenance updates

The Warren Aviation Commission met Tuesday evening at the Warren Municipal Building, where commissioners discussed airport maintenance, fuel sales and a proposed security gate intended to address unauthorized use of airport property.

Commission Chairman Dr. Joe Wharton presided over the 6 p.m. meeting. Commissioners Rick Stracner, Vernon Colvin and Rob Reep were also present. Commissioner Bryan Martin was absent, but a quorum was established.

The commission approved the minutes from its previous meeting held July 7.

Warren City Building Official Rob Johnson presented a maintenance report, updating commissioners on several matters involving the Warren Municipal Airport.

Johnson reported that the airport continues to sell aviation fuel exclusively to local pilots, with sales to the general public not currently available.

The airport’s credit card processing system is also not operational due to a contractual issue involving the company previously used to process transactions. As a result, fuel purchases are currently limited to cash transactions.

In a separate maintenance update, Johnson reported that the airport’s beacon has been repaired.

Commissioners also reviewed a proposal to install a new security gate at the airport in response to concerns about individuals using airport property for purposes unrelated to aviation.

The commission discussed instances of people parking and gathering at the airport without utilizing its facilities, with littering also identified as an ongoing concern.

A quote submitted by Ferrell Fence LLC placed the total cost of a proposed security gate at $11,834.21.

Rather than moving forward with the proposal immediately, commissioners tabled the matter and requested a second bid for comparison before making a decision.

No action was taken to approve the gate installation during Tuesday’s meeting.

With no further business, the commission adjourned.
