PINE BLUFF, Ark. — On Monday, September 14, 2026, Arkansas State Police (ASP) Cold Case Unit Agents and Pine Bluff Police Department (PBPD) officers arrested a Jacksonville woman in connection with the 1992 homicide of a newborn baby boy in Pine Bluff.
Stephanie Amos, 52, was taken into custody without incident after investigators served an arrest warrant charging her with one count of Capital Murder. Amos was transported to the Jefferson County Detention Center, where she was ordered held without bond.
The arrest stems from the June 22, 1992, discovery of a newborn male infant’s body in a ditch in the 1000 block of South Mulberry Street in Pine Bluff.
The PBPD initiated an investigation at the time. An autopsy conducted by the Medical Examiner’s Office at the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory (ASCL) determined the infant’s cause of death was craniocerebral trauma. The manner of death was ruled a homicide.
The investigation later stalled.
In early October 2025, PBPD requested assistance from the ASP Cold Case Unit. Later that month, the ASCL notified the ASP Cold Case Unit that a DNA sample obtained from the infant had been analyzed and entered into the Combined DNA Index System, or CODIS. The infant’s DNA profile generated a hit to Amos, a former Pine Bluff resident whose DNA was in CODIS as a result of prior felony arrests and convictions.
ASP agents and PBPD investigators continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death. Investigators submitted a case file to the 11th West Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on June 17, 2026.
On July 29, 2026, prosecutors advised the Arkansas State Police Cold Case Unit that Amos would be charged with Capital Murder and a warrant was issued for her arrest.
